Challenge

Design a mobile app that empowers New York State residents eligible for SNAP benefits with accessible, engaging, and practical nutritional information, while overcoming the stigma associated with SNAP by establishing EatEasy as a distinct and positive brand.

User and Business Goals:

The redesign aims to provide users with reliable, relatable nutritional information tailored to their lifestyles, boosting their confidence in making healthier choices through concise, engaging, and mobile-friendly content. For the business, the goals are to enhance app engagement among SNAP-eligible residents, position EatEasy as a standalone, trusted brand distinct from traditional SNAP imagery, and foster positive perceptions of nutritional education without reinforcing the stigma associated with SNAP.

Research

User interviews and surveys were conducted to understand the needs, preferences, and mobile usage habits of SNAP-eligible individuals. This was complemented by analyzing demographic data to grasp the audience profile—mainly adult women in suburban and rural areas—and their communication preferences. Additionally, a review of existing SNAP-related content and engagement metrics identified gaps and opportunities for enhancing user experience and branding for EatEasy.

Solution

For EatEasy's redesign, we developed a friendly and supportive brand identity, steering clear of traditional SNAP colors and logos. The visual and verbal style is positive, lively, and encouraging, using real-life imagery to resonate with the audience’s environment and experiences. Conversational language positions EatEasy as a trusted friend providing practical tips. The UX/UI design features an intuitive, mobile-first interface with content in short, digestible formats for on-the-go users, incorporating engaging elements like “hacks” and “tune-ups” to make educational content actionable and relevant, all while ensuring easy navigation and accessibility.

Impact

The end goal for the redesign of EatEasy will increase user engagement. Establishing EatEasy as a distinct and empowering platform and effectively avoiding the negative connotations typically associated with SNAP.
